Highlights of this Tour
Itinerary and Where to Stay
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Amboseli
On the first day, you will head out from Nairobi in the morning and drive south toward Amboseli. The road takes you through flat bushland where you’ll start to see Maasai herders tending their cattle. You’ll reach your lodge in time for lunch and to get settled into your room. In the afternoon, you’ll head out for your first drive in the park. Amboseli is known for its large herds of elephants and the view of Mount Kilimanjaro across the border. You’ll spend the afternoon tracking wildlife near the marshes where the animals gather to drink, returning to the lodge for dinner in the evening.
Meals Day 1: Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Amboseli National Park
Where you sleep
Sentrim Amboseli Lodge
Mid-RangeDay 2: Amboseli Full Day
On the second day, you have a full day to explore Amboseli. Getting an early start is usually best because the sky is clearest over the mountain and the animals are more active before it gets hot. You’ll spend the morning and afternoon driving through the park, including the swamps which are full of hippos and water birds. Since you have two nights here, you can take your time watching the elephant families move through the dust or looking for the predators that stay in the thicker brush. You’ll return to the lodge for lunch and a break during the middle of the day before heading out again for the late afternoon.
Meals Day 2: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Amboseli National Park
Where you sleep
Sentrim Amboseli Lodge
Mid-RangeDay 3: Amboseli to Lake Naivasha
On the third day, you’ll have an early breakfast before starting the drive to Lake Naivasha. This is a long travel day that takes you back toward the city and then down into the Rift Valley. You’ll stop for lunch along the way as the landscape changes from the dry southern plains to the green, lush environment of the lake. You’ll reach your lodge in Naivasha in the afternoon. Later in the day, you’ll head to the water for a boat ride to see the hippos and the different water birds. It’s a very quiet and green area, and you’ll often see zebras or waterbucks grazing near the shore as you explore the lake.
Meals Day 3: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Lake Naivasha & Hell's Gate
Where you sleep
Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort
Mid-RangeDay 4: Naivasha to Lake Nakuru
On the fourth day, you’ll have breakfast and then take a short drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. You’ll arrive at your lodge inside the park in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll go for a game drive around the lake shore. This park is a dedicated sanctuary for rhinos, and it’s one of the best places to see both the black and white species. You’ll also look for the Rothschild’s giraffes and the buffalo that stay near the woodlands. You’ll spend the rest of the afternoon tracking these animals before returning to the lodge for dinner.
Meals Day 4: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Lake Nakuru National Park
Where you sleep
Lake Nakuru Lodge
Mid-RangeDay 5: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara
On the fifth day, you will have early breakfast and check out before starting the drive toward the Masai Mara. The route takes you back across the valley and through the town of Narok, which is the last main place to stop for a break and fuel. From there, the road turns to dirt as you head toward the eastern gate of the reserve. You’ll reach Mara Sopa Lodge in the afternoon, get settled into your cottage, and then head out for your first game drive in the Mara hills to look for lions before dinner.
Meals Day 5: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Masai Mara National Reserve
Where you sleep
Mara Maisha Camp
Mid-RangeDay 6: Full Day Masai Mara
The sixth day is dedicated to a full day of exploring the Masai Mara. You’ll head out early as the sun comes up to catch the predators while they are most active. Having a full day here allows you to drive deeper into the reserve toward the Talek area or the open plains where the grass is shorter and it’s easier to spot cheetahs. You can take a breakfast box and a packed lunch to eat out in the bush, sitting under the shade of an acacia tree. This is your chance to track the big cats and see the scale of the herds moving across the savannah before returning to the lodge for your final dinner.
Meals Day 6: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Masai Mara National Reserve
Where you sleep
Mara Maisha Camp
Mid-RangeDay 7: Departure for Nairobi
On the seventh day, you’ll have a full breakfast at the lodge and take your time packing your bags and checking out. You’ll then begin the drive back toward Nairobi, following the dirt tracks out of the reserve and passing back through Narok town. You’ll stop there for a quick lunch and a break from the vehicle. As you drive back up the escarpment and the air gets a bit cooler, you’ll head back into the city. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon, marking the end of the seven-day trip.

This seven-day safari is a complete journey through the most famous landscapes of the Rift Valley and the southern plains. It offers a steady change in scenery, starting with the dry elephant country of Amboseli, moving to the freshwater and alkaline lakes of Naivasha and Nakuru, and finishing in the open grasslands of the Masai Mara. Because you are covering several regions, you will see a lot of the country’s daily life as you pass through small farming towns and rural markets. It is a trip designed for variety, giving you the best chance to see the "Big Five" and a huge range of birdlife while staying in comfortable, mid-range lodges.
Road Travel: This trip covers a lot of ground. The drives between Amboseli and Naivasha, and later toward the Mara, are quite long. Having a 4x4 Land Cruiser is the best choice because it handles the bumpy dirt roads and the long highway stretches much more comfortably than a van. Weather: You will move through different altitudes. Amboseli can be very hot and dusty, while the mornings in Nakuru and the Mara can be quite cold. Packing layers, including a warm fleece or jacket, is essential for the early morning drives. Wildlife Sightings: While the "Big Five" are all present on this route, wildlife is unpredictable. Some days you might see everything quickly, and other days require more tracking and patience. Your guide will use their experience to find the best spots, but the extra time in the Mara and Amboseli increases your chances. The Lodges: Mid-range lodges like Sopa provide good comfort with private bathrooms and buffet meals. It’s worth noting that some lodges may use generators for power, which might be turned off for a few hours late at night. Water and Food: Bottled water is provided in your vehicle for the drives. If you have any specific dietary needs, it’s best to let the lodge know ahead of time so they can prepare your meals accordingly.
