Itinerary and Where to Stay

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

On the first day, you’ll leave Nairobi in the morning and start the drive toward the Rift Valley. You’ll stop at a local viewpoint to look out over the valley floor and then continue down the escarpment to Lake Naivasha. You’ll reach your lodge in time for lunch and get settled in. In the afternoon, you’ll head to the lake for a boat ride to see the hippos and the different water birds. It’s a very green area, and you might see zebras or waterbucks grazing near the shore as you explore the water’s edge. You’ll head back to the lodge in the evening for dinner.

Day 2: Naivasha to Lake Nakuru

On the second day, you’ll have breakfast and then take the short drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. You’ll arrive at your lodge inside the park and have some lunch before heading out for an afternoon game drive. The drive takes you around the edge of the lake, which is one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhinos. You’ll also look for the Rothschild’s giraffes and buffalo that stay near the water. You’ll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the park’s tracks before returning to the lodge for the night.

Day 3: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara

On the third day, you’ll have breakfast and then start the drive toward the Masai Mara. You’ll head back across the valley and pass through the town of Narok, which is the last main place to stop for a break and fuel. From there, the road turns to dirt as you head into Maasai land. You’ll reach Mara Sopa Lodge in the afternoon, get settled into your round stone cottage, and have a late lunch. Later in the afternoon, you’ll head out for your first game drive in the reserve. This part of the Mara is well known for its lions, and you’ll spend a few hours tracking them through the hills before returning to the lodge for the evening.

Day 4: Full Day Masai Mara

The fourth day is for spending as much time as possible in the reserve. You’ll get an early start as the sun comes up to see the animals while they are still active and the air is cool. Having a full day here allows you to drive further into the park toward the Talek area, where the plains open up and it's easier to spot cheetahs or large herds of elephants. You can take a breakfast box with you to eat out in the bush or head back to the lodge later in the morning. Since it gets hot in the middle of the day, you’ll return to Sopa for lunch and a few hours to relax by the pool. In the late afternoon, you’ll go back out for another drive or visit a local Maasai village near the lodge to see their traditions. You’ll finish the day back at the lodge for dinner.

Day 5: Mara to Nairobi

On the fifth day, you’ll have a relaxed breakfast at the lodge and take your time packing your bags. Once you’ve checked out, you’ll begin the drive back to Nairobi. You’ll follow the dirt roads out of the park and stop again in Narok for a quick lunch to break up the journey. As you drive back up the escarpment and the air gets a bit cooler, you’ll head back into the city. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon, marking the end of the five-day trip.

Quick Info

  • Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Starts: Nairobi
  • Ends: Nairobi

This five-day trip covers three very different parts of the Rift Valley, moving from the freshwater lake at Naivasha to the rhino sanctuary in Nakuru, and finally into the open savannah of the Masai Mara. It’s a trip designed for variety; you’ll start with boat rides and birdlife before moving into areas where you’ll track much larger animals like rhinos and lions. Because you are moving between different parks, you will spend several hours on the road every day, which gives you a good look at the countryside and the local towns along the way. You can expect the scenery to change constantly, from the green, lush areas around the lakes to the dry, rocky hills of the Mara.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind for this route. The drive from Nairobi to the lakes is mostly on paved roads, but once you head toward the Masai Mara, the road turns into a long, bumpy dirt track. A 4x4 Land Cruiser is the best choice for this trip because it handles the rough terrain much better than a van and gives you more room to move during game drives. Since you’ll be out in the sun for most of the day, it’s important to bring a hat and sunscreen, but you should also pack a warm jacket or fleece. The mornings in the Mara and the lakes can be quite chilly before the sun comes up, and it cools down quickly once the sun sets.

Regarding your stay, the lodges like Mara Sopa are built to be comfortable but traditional. You’ll have electricity and hot water, though some lodges might turn off their generators for a few hours late at night to save energy. It’s also good to know that park entry fees are usually charged per 24-hour period, so your guide will time your entry and exit to make the most of your passes. For the Masai Mara portion, we have kept the final day relaxed, meaning there is no game drive on the morning you head back to Nairobi. This allows you to have a proper breakfast and get on the road early enough to avoid the heavy traffic as you get back into the city.

Finally, remember that your guide is your best resource. They know the habits of the animals and the best spots to find them, but wildlife can be unpredictable. Some days you might see everything in the first hour, and other days it takes more patience and tracking. Bottled water is always provided in the vehicle, and it’s best to stick to that for drinking. If you want to visit a local village or buy souvenirs in Narok, just let your guide know so they can find the best places to stop. This trip is about the balance between the long drives and the time spent quietly watching the animals in their natural environment.
