Itinerary and Where to Stay

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli

On the first day, you’ll head south from Nairobi for the drive toward Amboseli. The road takes you through flat, dry bushland where you’ll start to see Maasai herders with their cattle along the way. You’ll reach your lodge in time for lunch and to settle into your room. In the afternoon, you’ll head out for a drive in the park. Amboseli is famous for its large herds of elephants and the view of Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. You’ll spend the afternoon tracking wildlife across the dusty plains and near the marshes where the animals gather to drink, returning to the lodge for dinner in the evening.

Day 2: Full Day Amboseli

On the second day, you have a full day to explore Amboseli. Getting an early start allows you to see the mountain when the sky is clearest and the animals are most active. You’ll spend the morning and afternoon driving through different parts of the park, including the swamps which are a magnet for hippos and birds. Since you have two nights here, you can take your time watching the elephant families move through the dust or looking for the park’s predators. You’ll return to the lodge for lunch and a bit of a break during the heat of the day before heading out again in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Amboseli to Lake Nakuru

On the third day, you’ll have an early breakfast before starting the long drive toward Lake Nakuru. This is the biggest travel day of the trip, taking you back toward the city and then down into the Rift Valley. You’ll stop for lunch along the way to break up the journey as the landscape shifts from dry plains to greener, forested hills. You will reach your lodge in Lake Nakuru in the late afternoon, giving you time to stretch your legs and have dinner after a long day in the vehicle.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara

On the fourth day, you’ll start with an early morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. This is the best time to find the white and black rhinos that stay near the lake shore, as well as the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. After the drive, you’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and check out before starting the drive toward the Masai Mara. The route takes you back across the valley floor and through the town of Narok for a quick break and fuel. From there, the road turns to dirt as you head toward the eastern gate of the reserve. You’ll reach Mara Sopa Lodge in the afternoon and, after a quick bite to eat, head out for a game drive in the hills to look for the local lion prides before dinner.

Destination: Masai Mara National Reserve

Day 5: Full Day Masai Mara

The fifth day is dedicated to a full day of exploring the Masai Mara. You’ll head out early as the sun comes up to catch the predators while they are still active. Having a full day here allows you to drive deeper into the reserve toward the Talek area or the open plains where the grass is shorter. You can take a breakfast box and a packed lunch to eat out in the bush, sitting under the shade of an acacia tree while you watch the wildlife. This is your chance to track the big cats and see the scale of the herds moving across the savannah. You’ll finish the day back at the lodge for your final dinner in the wild.

Day 6: Mara to Nairobi

On the sixth day, you’ll head out for one last early morning game drive before the sun gets too high. This is a final opportunity to find any animals you might have missed, like a leopard or a rhino, in the soft morning light. You’ll return to the lodge for a full breakfast and to pack your bags before starting the drive back to Nairobi. You’ll follow the dirt tracks out of the park and stop again in Narok for a quick lunch. As you drive back up the escarpment and the air gets cooler, you’ll head back into the city. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon.
