Itinerary and Where to Stay

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Londorossi Gate, where you’ll complete the park registration and meet your mountain crew. After a short final drive to the Lemosho trailhead, the trek starts in the dense, emerald-green rainforest. The trail is often damp and winding, leading you under a heavy canopy of ancient trees and giant ferns. You’ll spend about three or four hours walking through this quiet, shaded world, listening to the sounds of the birds and keeping an eye out for monkeys in the high branches. You’ll reach Mti Mkubwa, or "Big Tree" Camp, in the late afternoon. Your tents will already be set up in a small clearing in the forest, and you’ll spend your first night getting used to the rhythm of the mountain while the crew prepares a hot dinner.

Meals Day 1: Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 2: Shira Ridge

The second day is a steady climb that takes you out of the heavy forest and into the heather and moorland zone. The tall trees are replaced by shrubs and tall grasses as you ascend the Shira Ridge. It’s a steep climb in some sections, but as you reach the top of the ridge, the landscape opens up dramatically. You’ll get your first real look at the Shira Plateau, a vast, flat expanse that was once Kilimanjaro’s third volcanic peak before it collapsed. The walk takes about five or six hours, and you’ll reach Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon. The camp sits on the edge of the plateau, offering a massive view of the Kibo peak in the distance as the sun sets over the western clouds.

Meals Day 2: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2

This day is spent traversing the Shira Plateau, a relatively flat and gentle walk that is perfect for helping your body adjust to the altitude. You’ll move through a landscape of volcanic rock and unique high-altitude plants like the giant lobelia. It is a scenic and relaxed day of walking, taking about three to four hours to reach Shira 2 Camp. Having this extra time at 3,800 meters is vital for acclimatization before the more demanding days ahead. You’ll arrive at camp in time for lunch and have the afternoon to rest, take a short walk to explore the nearby rock formations, or simply sit and watch the light change over the mountain’s southern ice fields.

Meals Day 3: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 4: Lava Tower to Barranco

On the fourth day, you’ll head east into a barren, semi-desert landscape. This is one of the most important days for your health, as you will follow the "climb high, sleep low" rule. You’ll ascend toward the Lava Tower, a massive volcanic plug that sits at 4,600 meters. The air is noticeably thinner here, and the walk across the rocky terrain is slow and steady. After a hot lunch at the base of the tower, you’ll begin a long descent into the Great Barranco Valley. This area is famous for its forests of giant groundsels and its steep valley walls. You’ll spend the night at Barranco Camp, which is tucked under the massive Barranco Wall, feeling much stronger after spending time at the higher altitude earlier in the day.

Meals Day 4: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 5: Karanga Camp

The fifth day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall. While it looks like a vertical rock face from the camp, it is a safe and exciting climb that doesn't require any technical gear, just some focus on your footing and the use of your hands in a few spots. Reaching the top of the wall offers one of the best views on the entire mountain, looking back at the plateau and forward toward the glaciers. The trail then continues across a series of ridges and small valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day of walking, about four hours, giving you plenty of time to rest and hydrate before the final push toward the base camp.

Meals Day 5: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 6: Summit Attempt

After breakfast, you’ll leave Karanga and begin the steady climb toward Barafu Camp. The landscape becomes even more barren as you move deeper into the alpine desert zone, with very little vegetation surviving in the rocky, dry soil. The trail climbs steadily, and you’ll feel the air getting colder as you reach the ridge where Barafu Camp is perched. This is the base camp for your summit attempt, and you’ll arrive in the early afternoon. The focus of the evening is on staying warm, eating a high-energy meal, and getting as much rest as possible, as your guides will wake you up just after midnight to start the final climb.

Meals Day 6: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 7: Final Descent

The summit push begins in the dark, moving slowly up the steep scree slopes toward the crater rim. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the trek, but reaching Stella Point as the sun begins to rise over the clouds is an experience you won't soon forget. From there, it is a final walk along the snowy rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin the long descent back to Barafu for a quick rest and then continue down the mountain to Mweka Camp, which sits back in the forest belt. The following morning, you’ll finish the descent through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your certificates and say goodbye to your crew before returning to the city.

Quick Info

  • Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights

The 7-Day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic and rewarding path up Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the west, this route begins in a remote, quiet forest and eventually joins the more popular trails as it traverses the spectacular Shira Plateau. It is highly recommended because its longer, more gradual ascent offers an excellent acclimatization profile, leading to one of the highest summit success rates on the mountain. You will move through five distinct ecological zones, starting in the lush, humid rainforest where wildlife like colobus monkeys are common, then climbing through the heather and moorland zones, crossing the high-alpine desert, and finally reaching the arctic world of the glaciers. This route is a camping journey where your support team sets up high-quality mountain tents at every stop, allowing you to experience the vastness and silence of the mountain in a way that very few other trails can offer.

Important Information for the Lemosho Route

  • Acclimatization Advantage: The 7-day Lemosho route is excellent for success because it gives your body three full days of gradual ascent across the Shira Plateau before you hit the higher altitudes. This slow approach, combined with the "climb high, sleep low" day at Lava Tower, is why this route has such a high success rate.

  • Packing and Gear: You will experience extreme temperature changes, from the humid forest to the freezing summit. You need a high-quality down jacket, thermal layers, and a sleeping bag rated for at least -10°C. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots that are well broken-in are essential to avoid blisters.

  • The Support Team: You are never alone on this journey. A team of guides, assistant guides, porters, and a cook will accompany you. They carry all the heavy equipment, set up your tents, and prepare three hot meals a day. It is customary to offer a tip to the team on the final day as a thank you for their hard work.

  • Pacing and Hydration: The golden rule on Kilimanjaro is "pole pole," which means slowly in Swahili. Walking at a relaxed pace helps your body save oxygen. You should also aim to drink 4–5 liters of water every day to help prevent altitude sickness, even if you aren't feeling thirsty.

  • Camping Life: This is a full camping experience. You will sleep in high-quality mountain tents with foam mats. While the porters do all the heavy lifting, you should still be prepared for the realities of outdoor life, including basic toilet facilities and very cold nights at the higher camps.
