Itinerary and Where to Stay

Day 1: Machame Gate to Camp

On the first day, you will head to the Machame Gate to register with the park rangers and meet your mountain crew. The trek begins in the lush rainforest, where the trail is often damp and winding under a thick canopy of ancient trees. You’ll spend about five to seven hours walking through this green, humid environment, keeping an eye out for the exotic birds and monkeys that live in the forest. As you climb higher, the trees begin to thin out, and you’ll reach Machame Camp at the edge of the forest belt. Your porters will have already set up the tents and prepared a hot meal, and you’ll spend your first night on the mountain getting used to the sounds of the bush at 3,000 meters.

Meals Day 1: Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 2: Machame to Shira Plateau

The second day is a shorter but steeper climb that takes you out of the forest and into the moorland. You’ll cross several rocky ridges and follow a trail that leads up onto the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. The landscape here is open and rocky, filled with giant heathers and lobelias that look like they belong in a prehistoric world. The walk takes about four or five hours, and as you reach Shira 2 Camp, you’ll have a clear view of the Kibo peak and the western glaciers. The air is noticeably thinner and cooler here, and you’ll spend the afternoon resting and enjoying the wide views over the clouds as the sun sets.

Meals Day 2: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 3: Lava Tower to Barranco

On the third day, the trail turns east into a semi-desert landscape. This is a vital day for acclimatization, as you will climb up to the base of the Lava Tower at 4,600 meters before descending back down to sleep at a lower altitude. The walk across the rocky, barren terrain is slow and steady, and you’ll feel the effects of the altitude as you reach the tower for lunch. Afterward, you’ll descend into the Great Barranco Valley, a beautiful area filled with giant groundsels and waterfalls. You’ll spend the night at Barranco Camp, which sits in the shadow of the massive Barranco Wall. This day of climbing high and sleeping low is exactly what your body needs to prepare for the final summit push.

Meals Day 3: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 4: Barranco Wall to Barafu

The fourth day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall. While it looks intimidating from the camp, it is a fun and safe climb that doesn't require any special equipment, just a bit of focus on your footing. Once you reach the top of the wall, you’ll have an incredible view across the mountain before the trail continues across several ridges and valleys toward the Karanga area. After a hot lunch, you’ll make the final push up to Barafu Camp, which is perched on a narrow, rocky ridge. This is the "base camp" for the summit, and you’ll arrive in the afternoon with enough time to have an early dinner and try to sleep, as the final climb begins in the middle of the night.

Meals Day 4: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 5: Uhuru Peak Summit

The summit push starts around midnight, moving through the dark and the extreme cold. Using a headlamp, you’ll follow your guide up the steep scree slopes toward the crater rim. This is the hardest part of the journey, requiring a slow, rhythmic pace to manage the thin air. You’ll reach Stella Point just as the sky begins to turn pink, and from there, it is a final walk along the snowy rim to reach Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the highest point in Africa and watching the sunrise over the glaciers, you’ll begin the long descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. You’ll then continue down the mountain to Mweka Camp, which sits back in the forest belt, for your final night on the mountain.

Meals Day 5: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 6: Mweka Descent

On the last day, the walk is a steady descent through the rainforest toward the Mweka Gate. The air feels thick and warm, and your legs will likely be tired from the summit day, but the downward slope makes the trek much faster. Once you reach the gate, you’ll sign out with the park authorities and receive your summit certificates. You’ll have a final lunch with your team of guides and porters to celebrate the successful trek before your vehicle arrives to take you back to the city. You’ll head to your hotel for a hot shower and a well-deserved rest after your six-day journey through the different worlds of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 6-Day Machame Route is widely considered the most beautiful path up Mount Kilimanjaro and is famously known as the "Whiskey" route. Unlike the Marangu path, this is a camping route where you spend your nights in high-quality mountain tents set up by your crew. It is a more rugged and physically demanding journey, but it offers a much better chance of reaching the summit because the trail follows a "climb high, sleep low" pattern that helps your body adjust to the altitude. You will trek through every climate zone on the mountain, from the humid rainforest at the base to the freezing glaciers at the top, experiencing some of the most iconic landmarks on the mountain, like the Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall.

Important Information for the Machame Route

  • Acclimatization Advantage: The Machame route is much better for your health than the shorter paths because of the "climb high, sleep low" day at the Lava Tower on day three. This helps prevent altitude sickness and makes the final summit push much more successful.

  • Camping Life: This is a full camping safari on the mountain. Your crew will carry all the equipment, including the tents, sleeping mats, and kitchen gear. They handle all the heavy work, so you only need to carry a small daypack with your water and personal items.

  • The Barranco Wall: This is one of the highlights of the trip. It isn't a technical climb, but it does involve some scrambling using your hands and feet. Your guides will be right with you to show you the best steps, and most hikers find it to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the trek.

  • Cold and Gear: You will experience extreme cold on the summit night, often reaching -10°C or lower. You need high-quality thermal layers, a heavy down jacket, and a sleeping bag rated for freezing temperatures. Good, broken-in hiking boots and warm gloves are essential for staying safe.

  • The Support Team: Your crew is the most important part of the trip. They work incredibly hard to ensure you are fed and comfortable in difficult conditions. It is customary to offer a tip to the guides, porters, and cook at the end of the journey to thank them for their support.
